The Legal Negotiator Workshop: October 25, 2017

Introduction

Research and Publication Cell has organised ‘The Legal Negotiator Workshop’ by Dr. Claudia Winkler on October 25, 2017.

The legal market has never been as competitive and challenging – and negotiation skills have never been as important in solving disputes and concluding contracts.

Background

The complexity of legal negotiations is unparalleled. Professionals across the legal field are challenged to stay on top of the law as well as excel in the art of negotiation to get the best deals for their clients every day. Our law students are sent out into a competitive world and challenged to quickly put the learned legal skills into practice. Effective communication, active listening and asking the right questions are skills pivotal to legal practice and success with any case or client.

Objective

The Great Legal Negotiator Workshop gives students an insight into the tools and skills of an effective counsel and negotiator. With the help of demonstrations, case studies, negotiation exercises and discussions we introduce the next generation of lawyers to the Win-Win Negotiation Concept as popularized by the Harvard Negotiation Project. Students will learn how to:

  • Communicate effectively in a negotiation setting
  • Focus on interests, rather than positions to create value in their negotiations
  • Prepare and structure a negotiation
  • Maximize their bargaining power and keep control throughout the negotiation

Through the interactive nature of the course, students will gain hands-on experience and feedback during the workshop. This way they can instantly implement their new skills in the next negotiation immediately.

Dr. Claudia Winkler has graduated from the Harvard Negotiation Project and will show you how negotiation skills are a crucial skill for your legal career. In this workshop she will introduce you to the most important tools and skills every lawyer needs to succeed in negotiation and show you how to develop your skills further.

About the Resource Person

Dr. Claudia Winkler, Founder, The Negotiation Academy and Director, IBA-VISAC CDRC Vienna Mediation and Negotiation Competition

Dr. Claudia Winkler LL.M. (Harvard) is a negotiation and mediation trainer, the founder or The Negotiation Academy and the Director of the IBA-VIAC CDRC Vienna Mediation and Negotiation Competition. An energetic and creative communicator she blends her variety of top legal educations with her international legal and business experience. Claudia received her Master's and Doctor's degree in European and international law from the University of Linz and her LL.M. from Harvard Law School. Her professional experience reaches from law to government, non-for profit, start-up, university and international institutions. She has worked as the ADR development coordinator with the New York International Arbitration Center during her time as a Fulbright scholar and is a licensed Mediator in New York. As a trainer (www.ClaudiaWinkler.net) Claudia has worked with law firms, businesses, associations and universities in the United States, Europe, Africa and Australia.
