Teaching Sessions on Contemporary Issues in International Law: April 13 & 16, 2018


It is pleasure to inform you all that Research and Publication Cell in association with International Cell has organised Teaching Sessions on Contemporary Issues in International Law by Prof. (Dr.) S Rama Rao, Former Director, New York Coordination Office of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on April 13 & 16, 2018 in Reference Section, Ground Floor, Academic Block, Symbiosis Law School, NOIDA.

Earlier Prof. (Dr.) S Rama Rao was Deputy Director, Senior Counselor and Counselor there and has been working with WIPO since 1998. He represents WIPO at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters and undertakes outreach functions in the USA. His functions mainly covered representing WIPO at the United Nations in New York, address the issues of intellectual property as they arise in several committees of the General Assembly, participate in the UN system wide meetings on behalf of WIPO, and head the office in New York.

Prior to joining WIPO, Prof. (Dr.) S Rama Rao worked with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of India for over twenty years and was selected to the position of chief Legal Adviser and Joint Secretary in New Delhi. He assisted the Attorney General of India on human rights and on related matters of international law. As a diplomat, he held the position of Legal Adviser to the Indian Mission to the United Nations from 1995 to 1998 and represented India in numerous meetings of the UN and its bodies, including the UN Legal (Sixth) Committee and its subordinate committees. He was elected Chairman of the Finance Committee of the International Sea-Bed Authority for five years commencing 1996, Chairman of the Administrative and Finance Group of the Rome Diplomatic Conference on International Criminal Court, 1998, and coordinated in the UN Legal Committee the resolution on the International Law Commission from 1995 to 98.

Prof. (Dr.) S Rama Rao lectured extensively on intellectual property, WIPO and the UN at several universities in the USA including University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University Law School, Cardozo Law School, Washington University School of Law and Pace University Law School.

In India, Prof. (Dr.) S Rama Rao has been a visiting faculty to Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy, New Delhi, Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy, New Delhi, Indian Foreign Service Training Institute, New Delhi, India etc.

Prof. (Dr.) S Rama Rao has worked in the field of International Intellectual Property Law, Public Health, Bilateral Investment Protection, International Environment Law, Sustainable Development, Technology and Innovation, and arbitration particularly with reference to foreign investments, intellectual property, technology, uniform domain names and UNCITRAL commercial arbitration matters. Other areas of his specialization include International Law, Law of International Institutions, Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Court, International Law on Terrorism, and Law of the Sea.

Prof. (Dr.) S Rama Rao has Ph.D. and M.Phil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and LL.M., LL.B (JD) and B.Sc. from Andhra University, Waltair, India. He worked at the Dalhousie University, Canada in 1982, was UN International Law Fellow in 1984 and worked at The Hague Academy of International Law, International Court of Justice, Office of Legal Affairs of the UN and at the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in 1984.
