Legal Aid Centre

Symbiosis International University’s mission is: ‘Fostering spirit of national development’, ‘instilling sensitivity amongst the youth towards the community’, ‘contributing towards knowledge generation and dissemination’, and ‘promoting ethical and value-based learning’. The Legal Aid Centre at Symbiosis Law School, NOIDA was established with the aim and objective to serve legal aid, through human resource, knowledge resource, & infrastructural resource, to those who need it the most, purely on pro-bono basis’. It is a blend of legal duty (as laid down under Rule 31 of Bar Council of India’s Rules of Legal Education, and Rule 11 of Schedule III of the said ‘Rules’) of the Law School along with the overarching mission of the Symbiosis International (Deemed) University.

The Legal Aid Centre strives to: do its utmost to help people access their rights under Articles 21 and 39A; engender sensitivity and empathy, not sympathy and pity; help the silenced find their voice, not speak for them, and recognize their agency; raise awareness of the intersectionality of legal rights abuses; and work with communities and NGOs at the grassroots level to effect substantive change.

LEGAL AWARENESS AND LEGAL LITERACY

In order to facilitate greater agency and self-sufficiency amongst the populace, the Legal Aid Centre holds multiple awareness drives, targeting the intended demographic with not just personal interactions, but also through pamphlets and posters in multiple languages, art, drama, and various other interdisciplinary modes.

SOCIAL OUTREACH

Oftentimes, mere knowledge of a person’s rights does not suffice and will lead to a mere formal equality. In order to effect substantive change and affirmative equality, it is imperative to engage with communities at the grassroots level and foster education, sensitivity, and awareness through a variety of drives and campaigns.

LEGAL TRAINING

The members of the Legal Aid Centre are expected to step in to offer assistance to people who may have had their voices snatched from them. In order to do so, they must be sensitised to prevailing legal issues and imparted with appropriate training so that they are capable of drafting documents like complaints, RTIs, affidavits, etc.

CORE LEGAL AID

Persons in need of assistance, depending on the situation, will be given core legal aid. This will include the dissemination of information and advice as per legal provisions, ensuring access to legal forums/authorities, presenting the case of such persons before legal forums/authorities, and similar activities.

COMPOSITION

The Legal Aid Centre is headed by a Full Time Faculty member as ‘Administrator-Legal Aid Centre’. The Administrator through selection process selects and appoints ‘Volunteers’ and ‘Paralegal Volunteers’ to be overseen by an executive group consisting of a ‘Convener’ and two ‘Co-conveners’. The Legal Aid Centre is overseen by the Director, Symbiosis Law School NOIDA.

Pro Bono Club

INTRODUCTION

The Pro Bono Club was established by Symbiosis Law School, NOIDA (hereinafter referred as Law School) in collaboration with the Department of Justice, Government of India, under the Nyaya Bandhu Programme, being one of the select few law schools selected for this august purpose.

The Nyaya Bandhu Programme, initiative of the Department of Justice, Government of India aims to connect practising advocates interested in pro bono work with eligible marginalized and vulnerable beneficiaries, via mobile technology. The primary objective of this scheme is to improve the efficiency and quality of pro bono legal services by providing assistance to pro bono advocates through competent law students.

AIMS

In keeping with the objectives of the Nyaya Bandhu programme, the main aims of the Club are:

  • To assist Pro Bono Advocates in researching and drafting legal instrument so that they may more efficiently argue cases on behalf of persons in need of free legal aid;
  • To spread awareness of the Nyaya Bandhu app (hereinafter referred as App) and familiarise the average layperson with its workings so that he or she may be able to seek justice; and
  • To disseminate legal knowledge and spread legal literacy through the use of videos and pamphlets, by way of door-to-door campaigns, drives, and webinars.
COMPOSITION

The Pro Bono Club is overseen by Ms Megha Nagpal, Assistant Professor (Full Time) as ‘Faculty Advisor’. It consists of five Pro Bono Associates, who belong to established batches of the law school. The Pro Bono Club works in close coordination with pro bono advocates who have registered themselves with the App.
